Small family-run B&B in rainforest at Tarcoles, 1 hour from San José, ideal for exploring Carara Park and Costa Rica's central Pacific coast.

Rancho Capulin B&B is a small family-run establishment on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, in Tarcoles, on the edge of tropical rainforest. About an hour's drive from San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport, it makes a convenient stop at the beginning or end of an itinerary, and a solid base for exploring Carara National Park and the central coast.

Why stay here

Rancho Capulin ticks several boxes for a Costa Rica trip: a location between forest and ocean, an English-speaking team fluent in four languages (English, Spanish, German, and French) ready to arrange excursions and transfers, and wildlife visible from the breakfast table. It's an intimate B&B format, more personal than a beach hotel, designed for nature-focused travelers rather than party seekers—bachelor parties and similar events aren't permitted on the property.

Atmosphere

The vibe is that of a rainforest guesthouse: you hear birds before traffic, and coatis, monkeys, and scarlet macaws regularly pass within sight of the breakfast terrace. The décor strikes a understated tropical note, common areas open onto the garden, and service remains personalized—a real contrast to the more anonymous resorts in Jaco.

Rooms

The B&B offers five categories of non-smoking accommodations, each with its own character:

  • The Rancho
  • La Casita Melina #1
  • La Casita Melina #2
  • La Terazza
  • El Mirador

Depending on the category, you'll find queen-size or king-size bed configurations, private bathroom with shower, and in some cases a small lounge, balcony or terrace, even a private pool. All come equipped with modern essentials: air conditioning, fan, refrigerator, kitchenette, kettle, and free Wi-Fi. Views overlook either the forest, garden, Tarcoles River, or Pacific Ocean.

Services and breakfast

Breakfast is served on-site: coffee, tea, homemade bread and pastries, eggs, and fresh fruit juice. It's also the perfect moment to spot wildlife visiting the garden—coatis, monkeys, scarlet macaws. Laundry service is available on request, parking is free for guests with rental cars, and the team speaks four languages (German, English, Spanish, French), which simplifies booking excursions and arranging transfers. For relaxation, the B&B has an outdoor pool and hot tub.

Location

Rancho Capulin is located in Tarcoles, on the central Pacific coast, about an hour's drive from San José's Juan Santamaría Airport. The position makes it easy to combine nights in the forest with days on the coast, without getting locked into Jaco's beach resort rhythm.

What to do nearby

  • Carara National Park just a few kilometers away: one of the country's best spots for birdwatching, including scarlet macaws, in a transition zone between dry and humid forest.
  • Tarcoles River right nearby: boat tours to spot crocodiles, birds, and iguanas.
  • Playa Jaco and Tortuga Surf School about 30 minutes away: surf lessons for all levels.
  • Vista Los Sueños Adventure Park: zip-lining above the canopy, horseback riding, ATV tours.

Continuing your Costa Rica journey

Rancho Capulin fits well into an itinerary combining the Pacific coast, volcanoes, and cloud forests. To extend the nature experience, the Trogon Lodge in the Savegre Valley offers a striking change in elevation, while the Miradas Arenal Hotel and Hot Springs lets you discover the Arenal volcano region. Further along the Pacific, the Hotel La Vela Boutique and Pirate Cove Hotel round out beach accommodation options. To build a custom itinerary, explore our Costa Rica trips.
