Nature & Escape

106-room lodge on a strip of land between the Tortuguero lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, accessible only by boat, at the heart of the national park.

On a 200-meter strip of land between the main Tortuguero lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, Laguna Lodge occupies a rare position: freshwater on one side, ocean on the other, and the national park within a boat ride away. Access is by river only, setting the tone for a nature-focused stay.

Why choose Laguna Lodge

  • Rare location between lagoon and sea, beach accessible within thirty meters
  • 106 rooms spread across wooden buildings, human-scaled despite capacity
  • Private jetty (Laguna Lodge Jetty) for outings into the park's canal system
  • Caribbean-inspired buffet cuisine, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options
  • Ideal position to observe green turtle nesting and hatching during season

Atmosphere

The lodge's character stems from its isolation. Once you arrive by boat, you leave Costa Rica's road-based logic for that of Tortuguero: traveling on foot between buildings, forest sounds, the lagoon lapping at your doorstep. Common spaces revolve around two outdoor pools (one reserved for children) and an open terrace overlooking the vegetation. The pace is unhurried, family-friendly, without pretense.

Services and dining

Rooms feature a private bathroom, sitting area, mosquito nets and ceiling fan—amenities suited to the humid Caribbean coast climate. A safe is provided for documents and valuables. Wi-Fi covers the entire property.

The restaurant operates on a buffet basis for all three meals, with a Caribbean focus (rice, black beans, fish, coconut milk-based dishes). Special dietary requirements are accommodated on request. A poolside bar and café round out the dining options. Breakfast is included in your stay.

The lodge also offers assistance with excursion planning and ticketing, plus a meeting room and beach towel service.

Activities on site and nearby

The lodge's botanical garden features plants organized by family, with notes on their medicinal and commercial uses—a good introduction before venturing into the park.

Tortuguero National Park canal tours depart by boat from the jetty, led by a naturalist guide and boatman. Plan for roughly two hours on the morning circuit, ideal for spotting birds, monkeys, caimans and sloths. Kayaks and canoes are available for those who prefer paddling.

Climbing Cerro Tortuguero (119 meters, about 3 km from the lodge) takes roughly ninety minutes and rewards you with an open view over the mosaic of lagoons, forest and shoreline.

When to visit

Tortuguero is worth visiting year-round, but two windows stand out:

  • July 1 to October 31: green turtle nesting season, observable on guided nighttime beach excursions.
  • September to November: egg hatching, with morning outings to watch hatchlings make their way to the sea.

Beyond these periods, canal wildlife remains the main draw.

Getting there

The lodge is located in Limón, in Pococí canton. From San José, the budget option combines two buses and a boat: bus to Cariari (roughly 1 hour 20 minutes), connection to La Pavona dock (roughly 1 hour 40 minutes), then boat to Tortuguero. Air access from San José via the local airstrip is also possible.
