With its tropical climate and diverse ecosystems, Costa Rica reveals itself differently depending on the time of year. Between a marked dry season and a quieter rainy season, each period offers specific conditions that influence your journey. Depending on the region, the climate ranges from sunny days to seasonal downpours and tropical humidity. Here's a guide to choosing the period that best suits your stay in the country.

Costa Rica's tropical climate in brief

Situated between two oceans, Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate. Temperatures vary little throughout the year, ranging between 20 and 32°C depending on altitude.

The country's geography creates fascinating microclimates: the central valley enjoys perpetual spring weather around 20°C, while coastal zones experience more intense heat, sometimes exceeding 35°C.

Altitude plays a major role in these climatic variations. In San José, perched at 1,160 meters, temperatures hover around 20°C. On the peaks of the mountain ranges, nights can even become cool with temperatures dropping below 15°C.

When to visit the main attractions?

When to visit San José?

San José's climate is rather mild year-round, with an average temperature of around 20°C. The climate is more moderate than on the coasts, though nights are cool and rainfall quite frequent. To enjoy favorable conditions, it's recommended to visit San José between December and March, during the dry season.

When to visit the Caribbean coast?

For a beach getaway on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, the most favorable periods are February to April and September to October. During these months, the climate is generally warm, sunny and dry. February to April is particularly popular among travelers. Being more humid than other regions of the country, the Caribbean coast should be avoided between June and August as well as in December, when there is more rain.

When to visit the Pacific coast?

The Pacific coast is ideal for swimming between December and March, with warm temperatures, calm seas and little rain. For more tranquility and lower prices, choose the rainy season. Surfers will particularly appreciate the waves between April and August.

And La Fortuna?

La Fortuna enjoys pleasant warm weather year-round. For dry, sunny weather, favor the months of January to April. Avoid June and October to reduce the risk of rain.

Best time to see sea turtles

Each year, numerous sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on Costa Rica's beaches. During "arribadas," thousands of sea turtles gather to lay their eggs in the sand. The nesting period varies by species, but from June to December, it's possible to observe turtles at Tortuguero.

Best time to see whales

It's between July and October that humpback whales cross the Pacific Ocean, near Costa Rica's coasts. These cetaceans take advantage of warm waters to breed and, out of curiosity, sometimes approach boats. To increase your chances of spotting these whales, head to Marino Ballena or Golfo Dulce.

Best time to see birds

From March to May, the dry season comes to an end and temperatures become milder. It's also when migratory and endemic birds stop to rest after their long journeys. During these months, many bird species are also visible in Costa Rica. Birdwatching tours are therefore particularly recommended during these months.

What is the cheapest time to travel?

For budget-conscious travelers, the period from May to November is the most advantageous. Accommodation rates drop by 30 to 40%, while airfares show significant discounts.

Travelers with a moderate budget will find what they're looking for in September–October on the Caribbean coast, where prices remain reasonable despite favorable weather. A trip in December costs on average 25% more than in low season.

Luxury enthusiasts will appreciate January–February, when high-end lodges offer their best services.

Which months to avoid?

September and October are months to avoid as they bring heavy rains and wind. This makes many activities difficult. Before booking, be sure to check the weather forecast. If you must travel during this period, favor the Cahuita region, which is generally sunnier during the rainy season.
