History
The indigenous Huetar people lived on these lands during the pre-Columbian era. The Spanish arrived in the valley at the beginning of the colonial period in search of gold. However, it was coffee plantations that brought them the greatest wealth during the 19th century. Over the years, San Gerardo de Dota came onto the radar of nature lovers, particularly ornithologists. The surrounding forests are home to rich bird fauna, including species endemic to Costa Rica.

Welcome to the House of Quetzals
The main bird-watching site in San Gerardo de Dota is located a half-hour walk from the village. It is Parque Nacional Los Quetzales, named in honor of the emblematic quetzal bird. Ancient indigenous peoples considered these majestic creatures sacred. Quetzals have russet and emerald-green plumage, with a distinctive long tail. The best time to observe them is the dry season, from December to April.
Trek up Cerro de la Muerte
Hike to Cerro de la Muerte located 9 km from San Gerardo de Dota. Towering at 3,451 m elevation, it is one of the highest mountains in Central America. The ascent can be challenging due to steep trails and changing weather conditions, but it's worth the effort. Upon reaching the summit, after crossing pine and oak forests where endemic animals live, savor views of the mountains, volcanoes, the Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea.
Explore the Río Savegre and Its Waterfall
San Gerardo de Dota is the ideal place to clear your mind and recharge. If you don't wish to search for quetzals or climb to the top of Cerro de la Muerte, you can opt for a pleasant walk along the Savegre River to its magnificent waterfall. The natural pools at the base of the cascade are perfect for swimming, but be cautious as currents can be strong and the water is quite cool. If you're passionate about fishing, the river is renowned for trout fishing.
You can travel in your own vehicle to reach San Gerardo de Dota. Leaving San José, follow the Pan-American Highway to the town of San Isidro del General, then continue on the gravel road to the village. The track winds through the mountain, offering stunning views of the hills and cloud forests.
If you prefer public transportation, regular buses connect San José to San Isidro del General, from where you can take a local bus to San Gerardo de Dota. Be sure to check schedules in advance as they may vary seasonally.
When to Visit?
The dry season, from December to April, is ideal for outdoor activities such as birdwatching and hiking. Days are sunny with mild temperatures. Conversely, the rainy season, from May to November, is cooler and more humid. It's when vegetation is most lush, and streams and waterfalls are at their most impressive.
San Gerardo de Dota is located in the mountains, so it's most practical to get around on foot to explore the village and its surroundings. To reach attractions that are a bit farther out, you can take a local bus, taxi, or rental car.
