Climate

The climate at Playa Potrero, like throughout Guanacaste, is generally warm and sunny year-round. The region experiences two distinct seasons:

  • A dry season from November to April
  • A rainy season from May to October

Temperatures range between 26°C to 35°C and can even reach 38°C during the dry season. At the seaside, cooling breezes provide relief. During the rainy season, these breezes remain consistent. However, humidity increases substantially.

The dry season is the ideal period to visit Playa Potrero, as weather is more predictable and sunny days are virtually guaranteed. That said, the rainy season has its own charm, with greener landscapes and fewer beach crowds.

By Car

Liberia International Airport, located approximately 40 km away, is the closest airport to Playa Potrero. You can rent a car to reach this beach. Simply take highways 21, 155, 180, and 911 for approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour of driving.

When you reach the Belén junction, follow the road westward toward the Huacas community. From there, take the road leading to Flamingo Marina. A few meters before the marina, turn right at a junction to reach Playa Potrero.

The most commonly used southern route to Playa Potrero is via Playa Flamingo, covering a distance of 66 km. The journey takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

If arriving from San José airport, which is 258 km from Playa Potrero, the drive takes approximately 4 hours.

It's worth noting that there is no official parking at Playa Potrero. However, you can park along the side of the main road (Route 911) running through the town of Potrero.

By Bus or Shuttle

Public buses are another option to reach Playa Potrero. They depart 3 times daily, passing through Playa Flamingo, with a journey lasting 6 hours. You can also take buses connecting Santa Cruz to Playa Potrero, which take approximately 2 hours to reach your destination.

Additionally, visitors can opt for shared shuttles departing from San José to Playa Potrero.

Playa Potrero Today

Today, Playa Potrero is home to a warm community of Ticos and expatriates, drawn by its serene setting and idyllic location. The area offers all necessary amenities including bars, restaurants, shops, and more.

Playa Potrero is divided into two sectors:

  • The southern section, near Playa Flamingo, also known as Surfside, is primarily home to private residences and beachfront vacation rentals. It also features several acclaimed restaurants.
  • The northern beach is the historic heart of town, where you'll find food stands, sodas (local restaurants), and a few small hotels. Along the waterfront, infrastructure is limited, but palm trees lining the bay provide pleasant shade for those seeking to relax.

Playa Potrero was among the region's first beaches developed for tourism. It hosts a genuine community of residents, most of whom work in surrounding villas, rental homes, and hotels. Over time, Playa Potrero has become not only a popular tourist attraction but also earned a reputation as one of the best places to live.
