Lodge in a private Guanacaste reserve: stilt bungalows above the canyon, natural thermal pools at 37°C, 30 km of trails and outdoor activities.

Rio Perdido Hotel & Thermal River occupies a private reserve of approximately 240 hectares in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. The property is organized around a canyon roughly sixty meters deep, where the cold waters of the Rio Blanco meet the naturally warm waters of the Rio Perdido. About thirty stilt bungalows, connected by a system of suspension bridges, make up the complex.

Why stay here

The property stands out for its thermal river, fed by the volcanic activity of the Rincón de la Vieja region. Waters here reach approximately 37°C and are distributed across more than ten natural thermal pools and three geothermal mineral basins. Beyond the thermal component, the resort functions as an outdoor hub: over 30 km of trails, zip-lining above the Rio Blanco gorge, tubing, mountain biking and via ferrata.

The orientation is clear: understated comfort, immersion in dry tropical forest, guided sports activities. This isn't a beach resort, but a base for those seeking to combine thermal experiences with active exploration.

Atmosphere and architecture

The architectural approach embraces minimalist aesthetics: wood, stretched nylon rope, stainless steel, polished concrete floors. The bungalows, elevated on stilts, seem to float above the canopy. Large glass windows open broadly onto the forest, and the walkways connecting the structures give the site the character of a suspended circuit rather than a conventional hotel.

The atmosphere remains calm. The pools, open from 7am to 10pm, are reserved for contemplative bathing: no floaties, no splashing. The experience resembles that of an onsen more than a water park.

The bungalows

Accommodations are divided into three categories, all accessible to people with reduced mobility:

  • East bungalows (42 m²): one bedroom with two twin beds on industrial casters.
  • Center bungalows (70 m²): one king bed and two twin beds, equipped with HD projector, retractable screen and sound bar with subwoofer for movie nights.
  • West bungalows (55 m², opened since October 2024): up to four guests.

Each unit features a private terrace with hammock, sun loungers and table, as well as en-suite bathroom (some with outdoor shower), air conditioning, mini-bar, mini-refrigerator, safe, Wi-Fi, coffee or tea maker, and sitting area.

Dining and services

The main restaurant works with local producers and offers fusion cuisine rooted in Costa Rican tradition: gallo pinto, casado, revisited nachos. Breakfast from 7am to 10am, lunch from 12pm to 3pm, dinner from 6pm to 9pm. Room service is available during these same hours, and the team can arrange riverside picnics or private outdoor dinners.

Canyon Bar, adjacent to the furthest pool, is open from 11am to 6pm. Its counter installed directly in the water and submerged stools make it one of the site's gathering points.

Services include: three treatment rooms (massages, facials, manicures), a craft workshop run by local artisans that also serves as a boutique, laundry, paid transfers from the airport, and English-speaking staff.

Outdoor activities

Thermal bathing and body painting

The thermal river is dotted with natural pools where guests can settle freely. One of them allows for volcanic mud body painting, rich in minerals.

Hiking

The trail network exceeds 30 km, from easy walks to more challenging hikes, by day or night. The most notable itineraries lead to Yurro waterfall, the carbonatadas (medicinal springs), Las Tumbas and Mesa Norte.

Mountain biking, zip-lining, tubing

The Bike Park features loops from 8 km to over 20 km, rather technical. The zip-line spans the Rio Blanco gorge, completed by a suspension bridge, a Tarzan swing and a via ferrata. Tubing descends the Rio Blanco through gorges, rapids and natural slides.

Yoga

Yoga and guided meditation classes on elevated platforms deep in the forest.

Location and access

The property is located approximately 1 hour by road from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia. A heliport situated a few kilometers away allows arrival by private charter flight. The isolated position at the head of a river valley makes arranging a transfer or rental vehicle advisable.

Nearby

To extend your stay in Costa Rica, several properties complement Rio Perdido well depending on your itinerary: Miradas Arenal Hotel and Hot Springs near Arenal volcano, Trogon Lodge in the cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota, Hotel La Vela Boutique on the Pacific side, or Pirate Cove Hotel on the Osa Peninsula.
