Tenorio Volcano National Park
Tenorio Volcano National Park
Tenorio Volcano National Park is home to the Río Celeste, whose waters turn striking turquoise at the Confluencia. Primary forest, waterfall, fumaroles and dense wildlife to discover from Bijagua.
Tenorio Volcano National Park stretches across the Guanacaste Cordillera in northwestern Costa Rica, built around a volcanic massif cloaked in humid tropical forest. It is best known for the Río Celeste, whose waters take on a striking turquoise hue thanks to a light diffusion phenomenon at the confluence of two sources. The park is also home to dense biodiversity and relatively uncrowded volcanic landscapes.

What you'll see
The main trail leads to the Confluencia, the point where two rivers meet and the water turns celestial blue. Along the way, you traverse primary forest populated by toucans, howler monkeys and poison dart frogs. The route also includes volcanic fumaroles, a waterfall (río Celeste catarata) and bubbling mud zones.
History and context
The park was established in 1976 to protect the ecosystems of Tenorio Volcano (1,916 meters), inactive for centuries but still geothermally active. Bribri legend tells that God painted the sky with the waters of this river, hence its name. Scientifically, the color results from Mie scattering: aluminosilicate particles in suspension scatter blue light at the confluence.
Highlights of the visit
The Confluencia
This is the most spectacular moment on the trail. Two transparent waterways merge and instantly produce intensely blue water. The effect is visible year-round, but mid-morning light enhances it.
The Río Celeste waterfall
Before the Confluencia, the trail descends toward a waterfall that plunges into a blue-green pool. The surrounding vegetation and mist create a particularly dense atmosphere.
Fumaroles and volcanic mud
Areas of sulfurous vapor and bubbling mud remind visitors of the underlying geothermal activity. These sites are marked; stay on the designated boardwalks.
Forest wildlife
Howler monkeys, keel-billed toucans, quetzals (at higher elevations), poison dart frogs and tapirs (rarer) inhabit the park. Early morning hours maximize wildlife viewing.
Photography tips
Mid-morning light (between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.) penetrates the canopy better and intensifies the water's color. Avoid days of heavy rain: the river becomes cloudy and loses its blue hue. A polarizing filter reduces surface reflections. Photography is permitted throughout the trail; no special restrictions are noted.
Location and access
The park is located a few kilometers from Bijagua, a town in Alajuela province. The main road from Liberia (approximately 2 hours) or from La Fortuna (approximately 2.5 hours) is passable by standard vehicle in dry season; a 4×4 is recommended during rainy season. Shared shuttles depart daily from La Fortuna and Liberia. Parking is available at the park entrance near the ranger station.
